Advanced Dentistry

Dental health is just as important for pets as it is for humans! Regular professional cleaning is important to maintain your pet’s teeth. It’s a known fact that most pets develop dental infections by 2 years old. Not only will your pet’s breath smell better, but there will also be less chance of oral infection. Long term infections and inflammation in the mouth have been known to cause cancer and resorptive lesions in animals over time. Keep your pets healthier and happier longer- ask about our dental club!

Dental X-rays Are Critical

Digital dental radiographs (x-rays) are an important tool in diagnosing and treating oral and dental disease. Without dental radiographs, dental problems can be missed as over 70% of early dental disease is below the gumline. Dental radiographs help aid in diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and post-operative success.

Digital dental radiographs are performed every time, and are used to view the supporting structures for the teeth. They are also used to identify potential problems.

Understanding What Your Pet’s Dental Health Grade Means

Grade 1

  • Mild gingivitis and plaque are present
  • Your pet needs a professional cleaning, charting or oral findings, polishing, and possible bonded sealants to protect the teeth

Grade 2

  • Mild to moderate tartar (mineralized plaque and bacteria) and gingivitis (red gums) are present on multiple teeth
  • Your pet needs a cleaning, oral assessment, probing, and oral surgery may be indicated. Bonded sealants may help protect teeth from further decay.

Grade 3

  • Heavy tartar and infection with bone loss are present, and oral pain is likely
  • Tooth lesions and fractures may be present under tartar
  • Your pet needs a professional cleaning likely followed by oral surgery. Biospies may be needed.

Grade 4

  • Severe tartar, infection, periodontal disease, and oral pain are present, and tooth loss is occuring
  • Your pet needs a professional cleaning and oral surgery, root planning, and possible fracture repair

Regular professional cleaning is important to maintain your pet’s teeth. It’s a known fact that we can add 2 years to the life of the pet simply by keeping the mouth clean. Not only will your pet’s breath smell better, but there will also be less chance of oral infection caused by a buildup of bacteria under the gums. This decreases the chance of kidney & heart disease caused by infections spreading throughout the body from the mouth.
