Oral health is a vital component to the long life and well-being of your pet. Proper screening and early dental disease detection mean a happier, healthier companion.
Dental pain in our pets is a very difficult thing to assess. They are masters at hiding their pain. We humans, if our mouth hurts, we stop eating and go to the dentist. Pets believe that to stop eating would be to show weakness, and that may be the last sign they exhibit. Because they hide their pain so well, be on the lookout for the following signs: bad breath, new or excessive drooling, chattering teeth, red and inflamed gums, chewing on only one side, facial swelling, loss of interest in a favorite toy or activity, a change in behavior, or any combination of these.
At Bear Creek Animal Clinic, we examine your pet’s mouth as part of the annual physical examination. At that time the doctor may recommend a comprehensive oral health assessment and treatment. This would include an anesthetized complete oral examination, including an assessment of each tooth, photographs, and oral radiographs (x-rays). In this way, our doctors can see the complete picture of the health of your beloved companion’s mouth.
Before sedation, we will run laboratory tests to ensure your pet has no contraindications for anesthesia or pain control medications. Your pet’s vital signs are monitored constantly by one of our highly trained technicians. Please see the descriptions under Surgical Services for more information on what we do to keep your pet safe.
Upon completion of the oral examination and radiographs by the doctor, she will call to discuss with you any treatment that may be required for your pet’s oral health. This may include root canal therapy or periodontal therapy in an effort to save teeth. Surgical extraction may be required if the teeth are so unhealthy as to compromise the well-being of your pet.
